Hetian jade (nephrite) is China’s original and most time honoured jade, boasting the longest heritage among all Chinese sacred gemstones. For thousands of years, imperial dynasties exclusively chose Hetian jade for emperors’ imperial seals, ritual ceremonial vessels and royal personal talismans. For millennia, whenever ancient Chinese texts and philosophers referenced “jade”, they meant Hetian jade, not jadeite.
By comparison, jadeite only rose to popularity in China during the late Qing dynasty, carrying a far shorter cultural lineage.
